Cultural Capital of Kerala

Thrissur originally Thirusivapperoor and previously known as Trichur, is called as the, “Cultural Capital of Kerala”. Thrissur Pooram the most colourful and spectacular temple festival of Kerala is held here. Sri Krishna Temple at Guruvayur is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage centres which attract huge crowds throughout the year. Kodungalloor, which had the distinction of being the "Primum Emporium India", gave shelter to all the three communities like Christians, Jews and the Muslims. The Cheraman Juma Masjid, believed to be the oldest Mosque in India is situated here. Rev. Sr. Euphrasia, a famous saint for Catholic community is from Thrissur. The Kerala Kalamandalam & the Kerala Sahitya Academy are important organizations which play a vital role when it comes to the cultural aspects of the state.
